Terms of Service
Effective date: 2 March 2026
Storymaps.io ("the Service") is operated by the project maintainer ("the Operator", "we", "us"). By accessing or using this service, you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, please do not use the service.
1. Description of Service
Storymaps.io is a free, web-based user story mapping tool. It allows users to create, edit, share, and export user story maps. The source code is available under the AGPL-3.0 licence on GitHub. The service is provided as-is and may be updated, modified, or discontinued at any time without notice.
2. No Account Required
Storymaps.io does not require user accounts or authentication to use the core service. Maps are created with unique URLs that can be shared with others. Anyone with a map's URL can view or edit it unless the map owner has enabled password protection. You may optionally provide a display name for collaboration, which will be visible to other users on the same map and recorded in the map's activity log.
3. User Content
You retain ownership of any content you create using Storymaps.io, including story maps, notes, and exported data. By using the service, you grant us a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to store, transmit, and display your content solely for the purpose of providing the service.
You are responsible for the content you create and share. Do not use the service to store or transmit content that is unlawful, harmful, or infringes on the rights of others.
4. Data Storage and Persistence
- Map data is stored on our servers and synchronised in real-time between connected users.
- We do not guarantee permanent storage of your data. Maps may be deleted after extended periods of inactivity.
- You are responsible for exporting and backing up your own data. The service provides JSON, YAML, CSV, and various export options for this purpose.
- We may impose reasonable limits on map size, storage, or usage to maintain service quality.
5. Acceptable Use
You agree not to:
- Use the service for any unlawful purpose
- Attempt to gain unauthorised access to the service or its infrastructure
- Interfere with or disrupt the service or servers
- Use automated tools to excessively scrape or load the service
- Store sensitive personal data, financial data, health records, or classified information — the service does not provide enterprise-grade encryption or access controls and is not suitable for such data
6. Intellectual Property
The Storymaps.io source code is open-source and available under the AGPL-3.0 licence on GitHub. The Storymaps.io name, logo, and branding are the property of the Operator and may not be used without permission.
7. Third-Party Integrations
Storymaps.io offers import and export functionality with third-party services including Jira, Asana, Phabricator, and Linear. These integrations are provided for convenience. We are not responsible for the availability, terms, or behaviour of third-party services. API credentials you provide for imports or exports are transmitted to our server over HTTPS to proxy requests to the third-party service on your behalf. Credentials are never stored or logged on our servers.
8. Termination and Suspension
We reserve the right to suspend or terminate access to the service, remove content, or disable any map at our sole discretion, with or without notice, for any reason including but not limited to violation of these terms. We may also discontinue the service entirely at any time.
9. Disclaimer of Warranties
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, the service is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including but not limited to implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.
We do not warrant that the service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or secure. We do not warrant that any data stored in the service will be preserved indefinitely.
10. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, in no event shall the Operator be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of profits or data, arising out of or in connection with your use of the service.
The Operator's total aggregate liability for any direct damages arising out of or in connection with your use of the service shall not exceed the amount you have paid to use the service (which is zero, as the service is free).
11. Changes to These Terms
We reserve the right to modify these terms at any time. Changes will be reflected by updating the effective date at the top of this page. Continued use of the service after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised terms.
12. Governing Law
These terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales, without regard to conflict of law provisions.
